Network Edition
I can't find the features l was told would be available.
I've exported a lesson but my VLE won't import it.
Some features, notably the Lesson Builder SCORM export, the Page Zoom, Resources Overview, Add to Lesson button, Simple Search, and various SCORM export options, exist only in Version 2 of the program. Please make sure you've upgraded. Lessons exported from Version 1 cannot be imported to your VLE.
The installer is asking me for a code, but I can't find one anywhere. You are only licensed to install the program once you have purchased it. If you are asked for a code, please email dynamiclearningsales@hodder.co.uk with the title, ISBN, invoice number and the name of your school or college. Your details will be checked and the installation code will be sent to you by email.
The installation code provided doesn't work.
The installation codes consist of twenty alphanumeric digits. Please make sure you are entering the code correctly: it is easy to confuse the digit "1" with the letter "i", zeros with "O"s, and "2"s with "Z"s. Also note that the codes are case-sensitive. Try pasting the code in from the email. Please also make sure that the title and ISBN mentioned in the email matches that of the disc you're trying to install.
The installer says it "ended prematurely because of an error" and I cannot install the program.
This can happen if you do not have permission to install to the location you have chosen. Please contact your network administrator for advice.
Please also ensure any antivirus or other security software is switched off, then try again. Problems have been reported with McAfee antivirus software, in particular.
Another possible cause of this problem is a dirty or damaged disc. Please visually inspect it, clean if necessary, and try again. If the disc installs properly on a different machine, it is unlikely to be damaged.
I have a copy of "Germany 1918-1945" and am having trouble exporting a content pack for my VLE.
An update to the Germany title folder is available. Please go to this page and update your files according to the instructions provided.
What sort of licence does the Network Edition come with?
All Dynamic Learning Network discs come with a full site licence. You can install as many copies of the program as you like within your own school or educational establishment.
Will Dynamic Learning run in my VLE?
Dynamic Learning consists of a standalone executable for Windows and Mac (the "Engine") which loads specially-constructed folders of resources (the "titles"). It is not a web-based program and will not, itself, run in a VLE. However, a utility is provided to export all or most of the title's content in the form of SCORM 2004 (1.3) packs. These packs are fully tagged and can be imported into SCORM-compliant VLEs. Please see our VLE page for details and sample videos of the process.
Will Dynamic Learning run on my RM CC3 network?
Dynamic Learning SCORM packs have been tested and will run on RM CC3 networks.
Some files won't launch from RM's Kaleidos VLE. I just get a blank screen.
RM have identified a compatibility issue with the way Kaleidos deals with the query strings attached to certain files in the content pack. The issue leads to a "404 - file not found" error or a blank screen. The fix will be available in VLE 3.1.0, which RM say is due to be live for customers in June 2009. The update will be free for RM customers in Kaleidos Datacenter 1 (KDC1). Please contact RM if you require any further information.
More than one method is available to launch content pack files in Kaleidos: Hodder have found that this issue affects only one of these methods, so you may be able to access the resource by opening it from a different link.
I'm trying to import a content pack to Moodle, but it's bigger than Moodle will allow. What can I do?
This guide contains information about importing large content packs to Moodle. However, please update your Engine to Version 2, as Version 2 allows SCORM packs to be created in smaller, chapter- or lesson-sized chunks.
My school is in Northern Ireland; we use the C2K network. Will I be able to install and use Dynamic Learning?
Yes, but you may have to set up a "Virtual CD". Information Sheet A062 from C2K may help.
I've installed Dynamic Learning to a shared drive, but only one person can use it at a time. The second, and subsequent, users just get a "Script error - continue?" message.
This is caused by the first user opening part of Dynamic Learning with write permissions, locking others out. Please make sure that all the files in the Dynamic Learning "Engine" folder are set to read-only, and ensure that any Assessment Engine folder files are read-only unless specified otherwise in the Windows or Mac installation instructions.
Can I add my own resources to Dynamic Learning?
You can add your own resources to Lessons using the Lesson Builder's "Link to external file" function. You cannot replace Dynamic Learning resources with your own.
I've installed Dynamic Learning on a shared folder, but can't view any of the videos.
This is because the shared folder uses a UNC path. Adobe Flash's security settings will often not allow the video to play from UNC paths. This is a known bug with Flash, for which Adobe have yet to provide a fix. It is strongly recommended that PC users install the program to a drive mapped to a letter.
When I try to search for resources, the program freezes and has to be force-quit.
Unfortunately version 2.2.14 of the Dynamic Learning Engine contains a bug which causes the program to freeze when searches are performed. Please download the latest version of the Engine, which resolves the issue. This problem affects only users of Maths in Practice Year 7.
The Engine installer on the ICT InteraCT 3 disc says it can't find some files. What should I do?
Just press "Ignore" in the dialog box which is displayed. The files requested are not necessary for the program's correct operation - the message is left over from a development version of the Engine. However, a more recent version of the Engine is available to download: please use this instead.
ICT InteraCT 2, Unit 1.5, page 22, asks you to listen to some radio reports on the CD-ROM. I can't find them – where are they?
Unfortunately these two files were, in error, omitted from both Dynamic Learning Network and Student. You can download them here (you may need to right-click and "Save as", or they will play: ICT Radio Script 1.mp3 (964 Kb) and ICT Radio Script 2.mp3 (1.6 MB)
Can you explain which folders require which permissions?
This is explained in the PC installation instructions and Mac installation instructions; please read them for full details. To summarise, write access is not required by students to the Dynamic Learning folder. User data is stored in a hidden (on a PC; visible on a Mac) folder called "Dynamic Learning DO NOT EDIT". By default this is in users' "My Documents" or "Documents" folder, but its location can be changed using the Admin Console: see the Technical Help document for details. Users require read/write access to this folder.
Permissions for the Assessment Engine are fully documented in the installation instructions.
In "AQA Business for GCSE – Setting up a Business" I get an error message when I try to launch certain resources from one of the sample lessons. What's wrong?
The sample lesson "GCSE First lesson" in this title contains links to resources which were renamed before the disc was published: unfortunately the lesson was not updated to match, so the links have broken. The two affected resources are a video and an associated PDF. The correct documents are the "Enterprise and Entrepreneurs" video and worksheet on pages 14–15.
To fix the problem each user could delete the links from the lesson manually and add the correct resources from page 14 themselves, or follow these instructions to replace the entire lesson.
In Interactive English Year 7, I cannot access Unit 5.8 or export it to a SCORM pack.
This is the result of a small error in the Contents menu. A fix is available: please follow the instructions on this page.
In Interactive English Year 9, the PDF of Page 71 of the "Developing" pupil's book (Unit 8.1, "Using descriptive detail in non-fiction writing") misses out some text.
A replacement PDF is available: please follow the instructions on this page.
In "Germany 1918–1945" one of the sound files, "Source 2: Comments on German manners and culture" on page 6 seems to be incorrect.
Unfortunately a file used for testing was accidentally published in the reprint, DVD edition of this title.
To rectify the problem, please navigate to the Resources folder inside the Title folder (by default, on a PC, this is at C:\Program Files\Hodder Education\Dynamic Learning\Germany 1918-1945\Resources) and delete the file germany1918-1945_00210.mp3.
Then rename the file germany1918-1945_00210_.mp3 to remove the final underscore, i.e. give it the name of the file you just deleted, germany1918-1945_00210.mp3. This should resolve the issue.
I have OCR PE for A2 (ISBN 9780340958704) and can't print any of the PDFs. What's wrong?
These PDFs were mistakenly password-protected, disallowing printing. Please download this zip file (10 MB) which contains printable versions. You should unzip the contents to your OCR PE for A2 Network Edition/Resources folder, replacing the original 293 files.
The Assessment Engine (included with some Network Edition titles)
I have a title which includes the Assessment Engine, but can't log in to the Assessment Engine part.
Please ensure you have the Windows or Mac file attributes correctly set, as per the PDF of installation instructions included on the disc. Note that these are operating-system file attributes, not Group Policy. You must also give all users full control of the .aedb database file(s).
If you have two titles with Assessment Engines which are part of the same series, such as ICT InteraCT 1 and 2, note that two separate databases exist, but that the data is synchronised to both. Please make sure that the permissions for both databases are correct.
I can log in to the Assessment Engine, but get a message saying that the database is busy when I try to open or save classes, or save my test results.
This is because the permissions on the database files are not correct. Please ask your network administrator to ensure that all users have full control of the database file. They may also need full control of the containing folder. If the Dynamic Learning title is installed on an applications drive, try moving the .aedb files to a shared documents area to which everyone has full access, as the database may be inheriting restricted permissions from a folder higher up the tree. The Admin Console must be used to map to the relocated database files.
Can I assign individual tests to individual students, or prevent students from accessing certain tests?
It is not possible to restrict access in this way. When students log in, they can see, and take, all the available tests for the title or series, and receive feedback on their performance at the end of each test. Only their most recent score is saved, but teachers can export a report which says how many times the test was attempted.
The tests are formative progress tests and are not designed for summative assessment.
Can I add my own resources and tests to the Assessment Engine?
No. No mechanism exists to do this. Creating the tests is extremely complicated.
Can I amend the drop-downs in the Levelled Tests to include extra levels?
No, unfortunately not.
Will the Assessment Engine run in my VLE?
No. No part of Dynamic Learning itself will run in your VLE, but you can export the resources from your DL titles to the VLE. See our VLE pages for details. You cannot export Assessment Engine resources or questions to the VLE.
Student/Home Edition
I cannot get the Student Edition to work from within my school. A message says I don't have Internet access, even though I do.
The Student/Home Edition of Dynamic Learning was designed, and is licensed, only for individual students to use from home. A Network Edition of most Student titles is available for purchase if you would like to use it from within your school.
It is not possible to configure the Student Edition to use ports or domains other than those specified in the PC installation instructions and Mac installation instructions. Similarly, it is not possible to configure it to use a proxy server.
Will the Student Edition work in my VLE?
No. You must buy the Network Edition if you want resources for your VLE.
I've bought 30 copies of the book. Can I install 30 instances of the program on individual PCs at school?
No. You must buy the Network Edition. The Student Edition is designed and licensed for home use only.
I can't get it to work on my new Mac.
Unfortunately Dynamic Learning (Student/Home Edition) is not compatible with OS 10.5 (Leopard), the operating system which ships with all new Macs. This page explains why. A Home Standalone Edition of your title, compatible with Leopard, may also be available – please check here. Note also that the Network Edition is compatible with Leopard.
The disc won't install on my PC.
Please ensure you have full admin rights to your PC, then try again.
I've installed the disc on my PC, but I get an error message and the wrong title picture is displayed.
This is probably because you do not have sufficient administrative rights to your machine. Please try again using a full admin account.
What sort of licence does the Student Edition come with?
Dynamic Learning (Student Edition) is licensed only for individual students to use at home. It is not licensed for use within schools or other educational establishments. It is given away free as a companion to certain books and is intended to be an adjunct both to the book and the Network Edition of the same title.
Can I obtain more copies of the Student disc? My students keep losing them!
If you have purchased copies of books containing Dynamic Learning Student Edition discs and any of the supplied discs have been lost or damaged, you can request replacement copies by contacting iwona.krzysiek@hodder.co.uk.
I've got the Practical Cookery disc. Where are Chapters 16 – 24?
They're on Page 1, linked as PDFs, and you can also find them by searching for PDFs or by chapter name.
I've got the Theory of Catering disc from the book and it's asking me for a password. What is the password? The first print run of the Theory of Catering (11th Edition) included a demo disc rather than the actual Student/Home disc. In fact there
is no password – you can log in only as a student. Please contact
iwona.krzysiek@hodder.co.ukand request a Home Standalone disc, which will provide the full Student content. In the meanwhile
please see the Demo section, below, for details of how to access the content on the disc you do have.
Where are the answers to the questions in the book?
Answers to exercises in the book are not included in the Home/Student Edition discs. They are included in each equivalent Network Edition disc, protected by a password, as they are intended to be accessed by the teacher only.
Any reference in the book to answers being included on the accompanying CD-ROM is intended to mean "the Network Edition disc which accompanies this course", not "the Home Edition CD-ROM which is included with this book". Such references have been or will be clarified in later editions of the book.
I've got a French/German/Spanish disc. Where are the audio exercises and other material referred to in the book?
These books are designed for whole-class teaching and the audio for the exercises is available in the set of audio CDs that accompany the course. It is also available, together with electronic versions of the pages of the book and all other relevant material,in the Network Edition of each title.
The Dynamic Learning Home Edition "Review and Revise" CD-ROM inside the book is for revision purposes and contains extra material which does not relate directly to exercises in the book. The Home Edition does not, therefore, contain the audio for exercises in the book. The "See Dynamic Learning" banners in the book refer to the Network Edition of the program, for use in school.
Demo discs
Demos of many Dynamic Learning titles are available here.
The program asks for a "teacher password", but I don't know what this is.
Some of the first demos we created, such as Cesarani and Kinton's Theory of Catering, used the Network version of the Engine, and the teacher/student login dialog box was not suppressed. There is no "teacher password" on this demo disc; just press Return or click the Student button to log in as a student.
Certain other discs used the password "dynamic" or "teacher". The password should be printed on the disc itself.
Our most recent demo discs suppress the teacher/student login box entirely: you are automatically logged in as a teacher.
I can't get the demo to run on my Mac.
Some early demo discs were inadvertently created as PC-only. If you have a Mac, and a disc which appears to have no Mac application on it, please contact e-support@hodder.co.uk.
I have a Theory of Catering demo, but there doesn't seem to be any content in the program.
After you've launched the program, clicked the Theory of Catering thumbnail, and logged into the title as a Student (there is no Teacher password), you should see a button marked "Contents" on the right. Clicking this will bring up a multi-coloured menu on the left of the screen. Content is provided only for the purple one - Part 3 - Food Commodities, Nutrition and Science. Clicking this will show further clickable thumbnails in the right-hand pane as a sample of the full disc's contents.
I have a demo disc, but there's very little content on it.
The demo discs contain only a very small sample of the content which will be available in the Network Edition, but the full Network Edition discs can be ordered on approval by contacting Bookpoint at education@hodder.co.uk.
